‏The Interior Ministry invited on Thursday representatives of a number of diplomatic missions and international organisations, along with human rights councils and parliamentary human rights committees, to visit Wadi el-Natrun Prison new rehabilitation centre, in northern Egypt. The centre has been established in almost 10 months.

The tour included inspection of all the centre’s facilities; which include wide swathes of agricultural lands and animal farms, workshops, vocational training centres, playgrounds and recreational areas, well-equipped modern central hospital and clinics, prayer and study halls plus eight court rooms.

The ministry also invited a number of media people and correspondents of foreign news agencies to visit the premises.

‏Meanwhile, an unprecedented number, hitting a total of 20,516 inmates, were released upon presidential pardons issued over this year, the assistant interior minister for societal protection sector said yesterday.

He said the ministry expands releasing prisoners on conditional bail or for health reasons in accordance with the law in effort to encourage adjusting the behaviour of inmates, noting that about 11, 298 inmates were released under these reasons in 2021.

The interior ministry official described Wadi el-Natrun rehabilitation centre as a distinguished model of penal and rehabilitation institutions at the regional and international levels, reflecting prospects of development, progress and modernisation.

This model is sought to cover all governorates upon the presidential directives issued on promoting the concept of “decent life,” which constitutes a pillar of the new republic, he added.
