Ras Abu Galum is a wonderful reserve north of Dahab, on the southeast coast of Sinai.
It is a great snorkelling site. The coast of the reserve also offers visitors the chance of a memorable walk, especially between the reserve and the Blue Hole.
The area is easy to walk, taking visitors alongside the crystal clear water of the reserve and secluded beaches. Towering mountains appear nearby, creating a beautiful background.
Most people prefer to take a boat transfer to Ras Abu Galum. Nevertheless, some others prefer to walk one way and get the boat back.
The track is almost always an easy sandy path. Its compact sand makes it not hard to walk on.
The first part of the walk is where it surges the most. After a 400-metre walk, mainly through mountainous scenery, one can see the path down to the sea ahead.
The indigo water is gorgeous and one will be walking beside it for the rest of the trail. To get down to sea level, one has a 150-metre descent that looks steep from afar. However, when one actually gets there, it is not that bad.
None of the beaches along the trail are the idyllic sort. Nonetheless, they are all lovely to walk across.
As one crosses various beaches, one can see the remains of several cafés and shacks, telling of more active times in the past.
The next few kilometres all traverse various beaches as Ras Abu Galum comes more closely into view.
The steep mountains and turquoise and indigo water make for an absolutely beautiful scene.
Visitors can soon catch sight of where all the boats come into dock (from the Blue Hole). They can reach them at the 5.1 kilometre mark.
Just beyond the boats, visitors can find the main snorkel site at Ras Abu Galum Reserve.
They will find plenty of beach huts and rustic cafés where they can sit in the shade and buy drinks.
They can spend the night in one of the shacks. All the huts are very basic. Nevertheless, they offer a memorable setting.
One can walk straight off the beach and just a few metres offshore they will find some good snorkelling sites.
They are very likely to see other snorkelers in the water, so they will know where to go.
Colourful see creatures fill the scene in this area, making it worth the dive.
The Blue Lagoon is located at Ras Abu Galum. However, visitors need to take another boat, or a pick-up truck to get there.
