Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri emphasised the well-established historical relations between Egypt and Hungary that are based on mutual respect and common interests, noting that both countries share identical views and understanding on many issues.

The foreign minister’s remarks came during his meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártóin, in Budapest on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

During the meeting, the two top diplomats discussed ways to boost joint efforts to face the global economic challenges and their impact on the two countries, especially through enhancing economic co-operation, trade exchange and exchange of experiences.

Shoukri also praised the tangible development in economic relations between the two sides over the past years, referring in particular to the imminent completion of the implementation of the contract for the supply of railway carriages to Egypt.

The talks also dealt with the importance of the co-operation agreement between the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the Hungarian Agency for the Promotion of Exports.

For his part, the Hungarian foreign minister said his country looks forward to enhancing co-operation with Egypt in the cultural field, pointing to the 200 university scholarships provided by Hungary to Egypt, which contribute to the development of Egyptian capabilities and the strengthening of cultural ties between the two countries.

The meeting also discussed a number of regional and international issues of common interest, foremost of which were the Palestinian cause, situation in Libya, and conflict in Sudan, as well as the developments of the Ukrainian crisis and its repercussions.

Minister Shoukri was also keen to address Egypt’s efforts to host millions of refugees and immigrants, explaining that Egypt deals with this situation from a humanitarian perspective.
