Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam asserted that Egypt’s water sector is facing several challenges including the population growth and climate change impact, noting that Egypt is facing a shortage in rain water and is depending on the River Nile by 97 per cent.

The minister’s remarks were made during his participation in the 86th round of “Cairo Climate Talks” under the title of “Egypt’s Water Resources and Climate Change..Policies, Technology and societal solutions”. The talks are held under the sponsorship of the German and French embassies in Egypt at the premises of the French embassy.

Addressing the event, Sewilam said the water sector is a cornerstone of all sustainable projects, noting that the State is adopting a strategy for water management for 2037 and the National Strategy for Climate Change for 2030.

He reviewed the major projects carried out by the irrigation ministry to rehabilitate canals and expand in the recycling of agricultural waste water including the areas of Bahr El Baqar, El Hamam and Al Mahsama.

The minister also underlined Egypt’s future vision for the management of water resources through the adoption of applied researches and the use of solar energy along with desalination and treatment plants.

At the end of the session, the minister extended an invitation to all participants to participate in the 6th Cairo Water Week, which is due to convene in October.
