Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli witnessed on Sunday the signing of an agreement with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) on the arrangements for Cairo hosting of the 12th round of the World Urban Forum (WUF) in November 2024.

The agreement was co-signed by UN Under-Secretary-General , and Executive Director of the UN-Habitat, Maimunah Mohamed Sharif, and Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Assem el-Gazzar, and Minister of Local Development Hesham Amena.

Choosing Egypt as venue for the 12th WUF crowns several successes realised by the country’s New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA), including winning UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for 2021 in the field of sustainable urbanisation, from among 170 nominations in many countries, Cabinet Spokesman Nader Saad said.

He also referred to Egypt’s successful organisation of the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh last year.

Sunday’s agreement, which is complementary to an instrument the two sides signed on June 30, 2022, aims to define the mechanisms for implementing organisational arrangements and financial issues pertaining to convening the World Urban Forum in Egypt.

The agreement contains articles on organisational matters, the financial obligations of both sides, the UN-Habitat responsibilities and the other services related to accommodation, transportation and medical services, the Cabinet spokesman added.
