The UK Foreign Secretary has welcomed the two-month extension of the truce in Yemen, which has been agreed on August 2, according to a statement by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.
The statement said: “The UK welcomes the extension of the truce in Yemen. This is a significant achievement and further step towards the lasting peace in Yemen.”
“This truce must now lead to a permanent ceasefire.” added the statement.
Since the truce came into force on April 2 the number of civilian casualties is at a seven-year low and regional security has been strengthened.
The truce has delivered tangible benefits to Yemeni civilians, such as decreased fuel costs due to the flow of fuel into Hodeidah Port and an agreement to restart flights out of Sana’a, as well as the stopping of cross-border attacks by the Houthis into Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The UK hosted a Quint meeting on July 18, bringing together representatives from the Sultanate of Oman, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and United States. The group affirmed our full support for UN efforts to extend the truce and reiterated our commitment to stand by the people of Yemen.
The Arab League welcomed on Wednesday the extension of truce in Yemen.
Earlier, UN Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg announced that the parties agreed to extend the truce in Yemen under the same terms for 2 months.
This extension includes a commitment to intensify negotiations to reach an expanded truce agreement as soon as possible.
In a press release, AL Spokesman Gamal Roshdy said that the extension of the truce is a very happy decision for millions of Yemenis.
He hoped that the sides will honour the truce in the upcoming period and also hoped to intensify work to reach an extended and sustainable truce.
Meanwhile, The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the announcement made by the UN Special Envoy for Yemen of renewing the current truce for an additional two months in Yemen, reported Petra News Agency.
The ministry reiterated Jordan’s support for the United Nations’ efforts in this regard, expressing hope that the announcement would contribute to creating the conditions for a political solution that would end the crisis in Yemen, restore its security and stability, alleviate the suffering of its brotherly people and meet their aspirations for security and peace.
The Arab Parliament (AP) welcomed the decision of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg to extend the truce in Yemen for two months.
In a statement Wednesday, the AP affirmed that decision to extend the truce in Yemen contributes to reaching a comprehensive political solution in Yemen and supporting the political solutions initiatives in accordance with the UNSC’s resolutions in this respect.
The AP, meanwhile, stressed its keenness to support all efforts contributing to reaching a sustainable political solution for the Yemeni crisis and alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people.
The AP also hailed the efforts of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen under the leadership of Saudi Arabia and all the relevant parties to extend the truce, which will contribute to ending the seven-year-long war in Yemen.
