The Ongoing Struggle for a Palestinian State Amid the Occupation of Palestine
Share on FacebookWhatsapp

For decades, the dream of establishing a Palestinian state has been overshadowed by the harsh realities of the occupation of Palestine. While international bodies, regional leaders, and human rights organizations continue to call for justice, Palestinians remain caught between aspirations for sovereignty and the daily challenges of living under occupation. Understanding this struggle requires looking at its historical roots, the humanitarian impact of the occupation, and the future prospects for peace.

Historical Background

The roots of the Palestinian issue trace back to the early 20th century, particularly during the British Mandate in Palestine after World War I. Following the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which supported the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, tensions between the Arab population and incoming Jewish settlers intensified. The displacement of Palestinians accelerated after the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, an event Palestinians remember as the Nakba, or “catastrophe.” During this period, more than 700,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes, becoming refugees in neighboring countries.

The 1967 Six-Day War marked another turning point, with Israel occupying the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem—territories considered essential for the future establishment of a Palestinian state. Since then, the occupation of Palestine has shaped nearly every aspect of Palestinian life, from land rights and freedom of movement to access to resources and basic human dignity.

The Human Cost of Occupation

The ongoing occupation of Palestine has resulted in a deep humanitarian crisis. Palestinians living under occupation face restrictions on movement through checkpoints, military blockades, and separation walls. Families are frequently displaced due to settlement expansions, with homes demolished under the justification of security or lack of building permits—permits that are rarely granted to Palestinians.

In Gaza, the situation is even more dire. Often described as the world’s largest open-air prison, the densely populated strip suffers from severe restrictions on trade, travel, and access to medical supplies. Unemployment and poverty levels are among the highest globally, with youth bearing the brunt of the crisis.

The occupation also carries a psychological toll. Generations of Palestinians have grown up knowing only conflict, checkpoints, and the constant threat of violence. This reality has stifled the development of a normal social and economic life, reinforcing a cycle of instability and despair.

The International Call for a Palestinian State

Despite these challenges, the aspiration for an independent Palestinian state remains alive. The idea of a two-state solution—one where Israel and Palestine coexist side by side within secure and recognized borders—has long been the centerpiece of peace negotiations.

In 1988, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) officially declared the establishment of a Palestinian state, and over 130 countries have since recognized it. In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestine’s status to that of a “non-member observer state.” While these steps were symbolic victories, they have yet to translate into sovereignty on the ground.

Efforts to reach a negotiated settlement have repeatedly stalled due to political disagreements, security concerns, and the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which undermine the geographical and political viability of a future Palestinian state.

The Role of Settlements and Jerusalem

One of the biggest obstacles to realizing Palestinian statehood is the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. These settlements, considered illegal under international law, fragment Palestinian territories, making it increasingly difficult to establish a contiguous and independent state.

Jerusalem also remains at the heart of the conflict. Both Palestinians and Israelis claim the city as their capital, but Israel’s control over East Jerusalem—a territory Palestinians envision as the capital of their future state—has made compromise difficult. The status of holy sites within the city adds further layers of complexity, drawing international attention and concern.

Global Solidarity and Shifting Dynamics

The plight of Palestinians has sparked widespread global solidarity movements. From grassroots campaigns to international human rights organizations, voices across the world have called for an end to the occupation of Palestine and the recognition of Palestinian rights. The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, for example, has sought to apply non-violent pressure on Israel to comply with international law and respect Palestinian rights.

Meanwhile, geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East continue to evolve. While some Arab nations have normalized relations with Israel, Palestinians view these developments with skepticism, fearing that their cause may be sidelined. Nonetheless, the resilience of the Palestinian people and the enduring demand for justice ensure that the issue remains central to the broader struggle for peace in the region.

The Path Forward

The path toward a Palestinian state remains fraught with obstacles, yet it is not entirely out of reach. Achieving this goal requires renewed international engagement, genuine political will, and a commitment to justice and equality for both Palestinians and Israelis.

Key steps include halting settlement expansion, ensuring Palestinian access to land and resources, and addressing humanitarian needs in Gaza and the West Bank. More importantly, any sustainable solution must acknowledge the right of Palestinians to self-determination while ensuring security for all peoples in the region.

Conclusion

The question of Palestine is more than just a political issue—it is a struggle for dignity, justice, and basic human rights. The occupation of Palestine has inflicted immeasurable suffering, yet the dream of a Palestinian state continues to inspire hope among millions. While the road ahead is uncertain, the pursuit of peace and freedom for Palestine remains a cause that resonates far beyond its borders, reminding the world of the universal right to live in liberty and sovereignty.
