JEDDAH – The world is facing daunting challenges which require intensifying joint cooperation within the framework of the United Nations Charter principles that are based on mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, affirmed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
He made the remarks on Saturday while delivering a speech during the Jeddah Summit for Security and Development which attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
The Saudi crown prince welcomed the participants and conveyed greetings of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud.
He also voiced hope that this summit would pave the way for a new era of joint cooperation to enhance strategic partnership between the Arab countries and the US.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that intensifying cooperation among the Arab countries come in the first place to serve the joint interests and promote security and development in the region.
The daunting challenges which are facing the region due to the coronavirus and the geopolitical conditions require rallying international efforts in a bid to rejuvenate the global economy and attain food and health security, he added.
The environmental challenges which are besetting the whole world requires international cooperation and coordinated solutions at all levels to attain sustainable development through adopting a balanced approach toward more sustainable energy sources, he further said.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that adopting unrealistic policies to reduce emissions through excluding major energy sources without taking into account the resulting impact of these policies on the social and economic pillars of sustainable development and global supply chains will lead in the coming years to unprecedented inflation and rise in energy prices.
This will also result in the increase of unemployment rates and exacerbate serious social and security problems, including the growing poverty, famine, rising crime, extremism and terrorism, he went on to say.
The global economic growth is closely linked to benefiting from all available energy sources in the world, including hydrocarbons, while controlling their emissions through clean technologies, which enhance the possibility of the world achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 or even before while preserving energy supplies, the Saudi crown prince told the Jeddah summit.
Saudi Arabia has adopted a balanced approach to reduce carbon emission, he said, adding that this approach copes with its development plans.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stressed the importance of continuing to pump investments in fossil energy and clean technologies over the upcoming two decades.
“The Kingdom has plans to increase its oil production capacity to 13 million bpd and after that it will not have the ability to increase production further,” he added.
“The future of energy that we aspire requires adopting a clear-cut policy and priorities to attain security, stability and prosperity,” he added.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has called on Iran to cooperate with the countries of the region and not intervene in the affairs of regional countries.
He also urged Iran to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to fulfill its pledges in this respect.
Talking about the situation in Yemen and the Saudi stance in this respect, the Saudi crown prince said that the Kingdom’s vision to attain security and stability in the region supported all efforts aiming to reach a Yemeni-Yemeni solution and with the adherence to the three terms of reference for peace.
Saudi Arabia also exerted all efforts to maintaining the existing armistice, he said, affirming that his country will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people.
The Saudi crown prince affirmed that the region’s prosperity requires to swiftly reach a lasting and fair solution to the Palestinian cause.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said he is delighted to see an improvement in Iraq’s security and stability.
He also hailed the electricity interconnection agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and Iraq along with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
This agreement will contribute to providing electricity to Iraq, he added.
The Saudi crown prince also pointed out to the electricity interconnection project, which is currently being implemented between Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan.
He, meanwhile, voiced optimism that this summit would pave the way to herald a new era of hope for the youth in the region.
