Every year on June 6, Sweden celebrates its National Day. The day highlights two historical events. The first one happened on 6 June 1523, when Gustav Vasa was elected King of Sweden, and the second was the approval of an important Constitution on 6 June 1809. Both occasions are important milestones in the history of the Kingdom and laid the foundation of Sweden as the modern European nation state it is today.
To mark the anniversary, the Embassy of Sweden in Cairo hosted a grand event at the Ambassador’s Residence on June 18th, 2025. This year’s National Day celebration in Cairo carried a special message: a shared commitment to climate action, sustainability, and green innovation. The event brought together Egyptian and Swedish partners to commemorate the contribution of Swedish cutting-edge innovations to tackle climate change.
The event celebrated Sweden’s global leadership in sustainable development and its strong partnership with Egypt on environmental issues.
In his speech, the Swedish Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Mr. Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt, said that “Climate change is not just an environmental issue but a human issue, a development issue, and a matter of justice. Sweden has set ambitious goals to become one of the world’s first fossil-free welfare nations. We are investing in clean energy, circular economy models, and sustainable urban development not only at home, but through partnerships around the world.”
He underlined Sweden’s support for Egypt’s environmental agenda and praised the growing number of Swedish companies contributing to sustainable development in Egypt: “Swedish businesses are key drivers of this transformation. Across industries from transport to textiles, from digital infrastructure to design, Swedish companies are embedding sustainability into their core. They are showing that green growth is not only possible, but profitable and indeed necessary for our planet.”
The Ambassador then continued: “We are proud to see growing collaboration between Sweden and Egypt in many of these areas. Together, we are exploring new opportunities in areas such as sustainable energy and transport. We believe that by working together across borders and sectors we can build a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.”
The celebration featured an exhibition by 18 of the Swedish companies operating in Egypt where they showcased their innovative products and services. Guests had the opportunity to engage with industry leaders, discuss how Swedish companies contribute to tackle climate change in Egypt, and explore potential collaborations. The exhibition highlighted the significant contributions made by Swedish businesses to Egypt’s economic and environmental development.
Sweden Day celebration was organised in collaboration with the following Swedish companies: ABB, AstraZeneca, Atlas Copco, Electrolux, Elekta, Ericsson, Gamma Knife Centre, Hitachi Energy, IKEA, Nordic Water, Oriflame, Scania, SKF, Söderhub, Swedish Group, Tetra Pak, Transcom, and Volvo Cars [ Ezz Elarab].
