Lebanon fails to elect president for fifth time

Lebanon’s parliament failed on Thursday to elect a president for the fifth time.

A first voting round saw lawmaker Michel Moawad emerge as a frontrunner in the presidential race, but he fell far below the number of votes needed.

A two-thirds vote is needed for a presidential candidate to secure a win in the first round of voting, and an absolute majority is needed in subsequent rounds.
