Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio stressed that emphasis in the coming months should be put on the issue of appointing a new UN special envoy to Libya, who will be fully aware of the situation in the country, and able to mediate between the parties, describing it as a decisive step.
“We have learned in recent years that the appointment of a strong UN envoy allows for firm and effective mediation” between the parties, Di Maio said during a briefing to the Joint Foreign and Defense Committees of the House and Senate.
“It will therefore be very important to manage the transition period to the new appointment, after department of Stephanie Williams, who I thank for the work she has done,” he said.
“We will see what the next steps will be,” Di Mayo said in remarks published by Italy’s Aki news agency.
