Spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Hisham Mhanna has called for applying international humanitarian law, stressing it should be a priority.
Israel should honour its legal commitment to provide Palestinians with all that is needed to keep them alive, including food, medicine and basic services, Mhanna said in a phone-in with Al Qahera News Channel Thursday. It should also act to secure protection for civilians, he added.
“We’ve warned the conflicting parties of the consequences in Rafah if an expanded military operation is conducted there, with more than 1.5 million displaced persons living on less than 20 percent of the total area of the Gaza Strip in desperate humanitarian conditions,” the spokesman said.
Intensified political efforts should be exerted to put an end to that massacre, especially after the complete destruction of infrastructure in some areas, Mhanna urged.
The humanitarian solution is useless without an end to the military operations, Mhanna said, adding that security measures should also be taken to protect humanitarian teams working in the enclave.
