NEW YORK – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for a stand against all forms of hatred and discrimination.
In a message on the “International Day of Reflection on the Genocide that took place in 1994 against the Tutsis in Rwanda,” which was carried out by extremists on April 7 for a period of 100 days – according to the official website of the UN – the UN secretary general said, “On this day in 1994 and over the course of nearly 100 days since, one million Tutsi children, women and men were murdered by their fellow Rwandans.”
Guterres said: “We will never forget the victims of this genocide, and we will never forget the courage and resilience of those who survived and whose courage and willingness to forgive remain a ray of light and hope amid this dark chapter of human history. This year, we remind ourselves of the corrupt roots of genocide: hatred and today.”
“Around the world, the voices of extremism, division and hatred are once again awakening humanity’s darkest impulses, he added”
The UN secretary general said: “To those who seek to divide us, we must send a clear, unambiguous and urgent message: Never again.”
On the anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi minority, Guterres called for a pledge to stand united against all forms of hatred and discrimination.
