CAIRO – Egypt, under Assistant Foreign Minister for African Organizations Ambassador Ashraf Sweilem, will participate in the 43rd Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Kenya.
The meeting will be held ahead of the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (5th MYCM) of the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities, the Regional Mechanisms and the African Union Member States on July 16 in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting will be convened under the AU theme of the year 2023 “Acceleration of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation”.
The Egyptian delegation will group Ambassador of Egypt to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative of Egypt to the AU, Mohamed Gad.
In statements on Friday, amb. Sweilem said that Egypt will participate in the AU executive council’s meeting in light of its presidency of the steering committee of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development Agency (NEPAD) for two years.
He further noted that Egypt’s participation in the Council’s meeting is based on its direct involvement in the African continent and in light of the active role, which Egypt played when it chaired the summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern African Countries (COMESA), as well as the President’s concern with the post-conflict reconstruction and development file at the level of the AU.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the agenda of the AU Executive Council will review reports and decisions expected to be taken with regard to activating the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement and achieving regional integration in the continent.
The Council will also review a number of reports on financial and administrative affairs and the budget of the AU in the coming year, as well as the AU institutional reform and a number of important issues, topped by climate change and infrastructure projects.
