Drone strikes on the strategic Sudanese city of El-Obeid killed at least 23 people, a local rights group reported Thursday, marking one of the deadliest aerial attacks since the war erupted in April 2023.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has seen a sharp rise in drone warfare.
According to the Emergency Lawyers group, which monitors abuses in the war, the assault on the key southern Kordofan hub began Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday. Strikes hit residential neighborhoods, a funeral gathering, and a truck transporting food supplies. At least 19 others were wounded. The group attributed the attacks to the RSF.
The claims could not be independently verified, and the RSF has not issued an immediate response.
El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, has been under partial encirclement by paramilitary forces for months. Residents described scenes of widespread destruction, with homes reduced to rubble and bodies hurriedly taken to hospitals.
The United Nations has documented at least 880 civilian deaths from drone strikes across Sudan between January and April of this year.
