Armenians head to the polls on Sunday for a parliamentary election widely viewed as a pivotal test of the government’s push to secure a peace deal after its military defeat to Azerbaijan three years ago.
Recent surveys place Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party in the lead, with support reaching up to 32 per cent of voters. The pro-Russian Strong Armenia party follows in second place with as much as 11 per cent.
Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. (0400 GMT) and will close at 8 p.m. Approximately 2.48 million citizens are registered to vote in the landlocked country of 3 million, with turnout hitting about 14 per cent by 11 a.m.
