Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit said he looks forward to discussing the Syrian crisis during the upcoming meetings of the League Council.
This came during a phone call between Abul Gheit and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, following a meeting hosted by Amman for the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq and Egypt on Syria, an Arab League statement said yesterday.
Aboul Gheit’s spokesman Jamal Rushdi, said the Secretary-General thanked the Jordanian minister for communicating on this issue and assured him of the General Secretariat’s readiness to carry out what countries agree on in this regard.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq and Egypt held a consultative meeting in the Jordanian capital to discuss efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis, as a continuation of the meeting hosted by Saudi Arabia last month.
The ministers issued a statement in which they stressed cooperation between Syria, the countries involved and the UN in formulating a comprehensive strategy to improve security and fight terrorism. They also called for ending the presence of terrorist organizations in Syrian territories and stressed support Syria and its institutions to establish control over all its territories and impose the rule of law.
They also called for ending the presence of armed groups and terrorists on Syrian land, and stop foreign interference in Syrian domestic affairs, in accordance with the provisions of international law and the United Nations Charter. They agreed on effective steps to address security challenges related to border security by establishing effective coordination mechanisms between Syrian military and security institutions and their counterparts in neighboring countries.
