Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit has called on all Libyan parties to reach a consensus, instead of competing with each other, within the coming few months to overcome legal, constitutional and logistical challenges hindering the holding of the national elections on time.
Addressing a consultative ministerial meeting for Libya’s neighboring countries in Algeria, Abul Gheit stressed that kicking foreign forces and mercenaries out of Libya is mandatory to bring about stability and put an end to chaos in the country.
He stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum of resolutions taken at previous meetings on Libya, including reaching a ceasefire agreement and outlining an initial roadmap for the comprehensive settlement of the Libyan crisis.
He also called on members of the political dialogue forum to agree on a constitutional rule to hold the national elections scheduled for December 24 on time.
Abul Gheit voiced the pan-Arab body’s support for the government of national unity in Libya to take any measures it sees necessary to restore the country’s cohesion in a way that helps achieve national peace and development.
