Local Development Minister and Acting Environment Minister Manal Awad is taking part in the 21st General Conference of the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), held in Riyadh from 23 to 27 November.

Awad said Egypt’s participation comes at a time relations between Cairo and Riyadh are rapidly progressing, adding that co-operation with UNIDO has gained increasing attention from the Egyptian state as part of its efforts to develop the industrial sector, a key driver of sustainable development under Egypt’s Vision 2030.

She said UNIDO is currently implementing 21 projects in Egypt with a total value exceeding $61 million. These projects include program to enhance the competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises, integrate them into global supply chains and improve their access to affordable finance; adopt new technologies in the industrial sector; promote the use of green hydrogen; and strengthen circular-economy practices, particularly in addressing challenges related to plastic waste.

Other projects focus on empowering women in industry, he added.
