JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit said on Friday that the international scene is going through one of the most dangerous periods in contemporary history.
It is a time of polarization and tremendous competition among major powers at the expense of smaller or individual powers, Abul Gheit added during the opening of the 32nd Arab Summit held in Saudi Arabia.
In this difficult historic stage, Arab countries have no choice but to adhere to Arab interests as an essential criterion for international stances as well as to commit to coordination and collective action with a view to strengthening the Arab unity in confronting polarization pressures, he said.
The Arab League chief added that there are millions of Arabs who are still refugees or displaced due to unresolved crises, noting that a new grief in Sudan has been added to the sorrows of the Arab world.
In this regard, Abul Gheit said civilians in Sudan are paying a huge price for the armed confrontation in the country.
He expressed hope that the Arab Summit in Jeddah would be a starting point for activating an Arab solution that stops the bloodshed in Sudan, corrects past mistakes and upholds the supreme interest of the Sudanese State.
