Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit asserted that he agreed during his meeting with the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy Josep Borrell on the necessity of enhancing relations binding the AL and EU on all fronts of mutual concern.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Borrell following their talks in the AL’s premises on Sunday, Abul Gheit said positions of the two sides were coordinated regarding a number of issues of mutual concern in the region, with a special focus on the settlement of crises in Sudan and Libya.
The AL chief said that he held fruitful consultations with Borrell, adding he and the European official underscored the joint keenness on developing historical friendship ties and distinguished cooperation between the pan-Arab organization and the EU.
The Palestinian cause figures high on the agenda of today’s meeting and the two sides stressed constants of establishing comprehensive, everlasting and just peace for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the Arab Peace Initiative, based on a two-state solution, added Abul Gheit.
He added we strongly support together activation of the Arab Peace Initiative.
We discussed the difficult situation in Sudan, particularly the humanitarian situation and stressed the need of coordinating international action to rescue the situation politically and economically, according to him.
