CAIRO – Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit congratulated Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud for winning the historic presidential election in Somalia that was held on May 15, lauding the peaceful transition of power in the Arab country.
This came during a phone call on Thursday between Abul Gheit and the elected Somali president.
During their conversation, Abul Gheit asserted that the Arab League welcomes the invitation to attend the inauguration ceremony due to take place on June 9 in Mogadishu, an official source of the Arab League said.
The pan-Arab body’s chief asserted that the AL sides with Somalia in face of challenges, expressing his full trust in the ability of Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud to face the current crises in the country, the source added.
Abul Gheit wished that the step would be a turning point towards more security and stability in Somalia.
