RAFAH – The 46th humanitarian aid convoy under the initiative “Zad Al-Izza… From Egypt to Gaza” set off in the morning on Wednesday from the Egyptian side of the Rafah border terminal toward the Karam Abu Salem crossing, southeast of the Gaza Strip.
A senior official at the Rafah terminal stated that the convoy includes thousands of tonnes of relief and humanitarian aid, medical supplies and essential medications, in addition to several power generators and six fuel trucks.
The convoy was launched by the Egyptian Red Crescent on July 27 and has since delivered thousands of tons of aid, including food supply chains, flour, infant formula, medical necessities, therapeutic drugs and large quantities of fuel.
Israeli occupation forces closed the crossings linking Gaza to the outside world on March 2, following the end of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, after no further deal was reached to sustain the truce. The ceasefire was violated by a heavy aerial bombardment on March 18, followed by renewed ground incursions into various parts of Gaza that had previously been evacuated.
In May, the Israeli authorities allowed in a limited quantity of aid that fell far short of meeting the basic needs of Gaza’s population. This was done under a mechanism implemented in cooperation with an American security company, an arrangement that was rejected by the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as it contradicted established international aid protocols.
