CAIRO – The first meeting of the working group to develop a strategy for media and information kicked off on Tuesday at the Headquarters of the Arab League (AL) in Cairo.
During the meeting, Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League, emphasised the crucial role of the media education on enhancing the Arab media landscape, skills, interaction with media and digital platforms.
Khattabi expressed confidence that diverse national experiences will enrich the strategic document being developed by the Arab nations.
He underscored the need to intergrade media education into the Arab curriculum, particularly in media institutes, to promote digital citizenship, and ensure communication rights.
Additionally, the strategy aims to prepare youth for responsible media practices, honing their critical skills for understanding media content, especially in the context of fake news, he added.
He also said that the meetings seek to raise awareness about the dangers of violence and extremism.
The meeting is held in implementation of Decision No.552 of the Council of Arab ministers of information, issued during its ordinary session on May 29 in Bahrain.
