Mondelēz Egypt Foods, signed recently a solar power purchase agreement (“PPA”) with Ona Electric, a leading company in the field of installing solar energy systems in Egypt.
Located at Chocolate plant at the Tenth of Ramadan, the solar plant will have a capacity of 1 megawatt and will comprise over 1,800 solar panels for both rooftop and carport applications. Once completed, the solar plant is expected to produce 1,639 megawatt-hours of clean energy in the first year of operation, equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by 14,917 metric ton s through years of operation.
Mohammed Al Morsi, Chairman and Managing Director of Mondeléz Egypt Foods, said,” Sustainability is one of the key pillars of our strategy at Mondelēz International as we believe in the importance of investing in sustainability projects to further enable development in line with Egypt’s 2030 vision”
Declaring, “We thrive to have a positive impact on the communities we operate within, and we are committed to reduce our environmental impact by reaching zero carbon emissions by 2050”
He also added, “we believe in the major role that the private sector play in combating climate change, which aligns with our strategy of making our snacks the right way and protecting the planet”
Commenting on this millstone, Tamer El Kateb, Plant Manager of Mondelēz Chocolate factory, said, “Since its inception, Mondelēz Egypt Foods has remained committed to integrating sustainable practices at the heart of its business operations and setting ambitious goals to promote sustainability. We are focused to scale up our sustainability efforts to deliver meaningful change. Our partnership with Ona Electric is a step forward in our plans to create a sustainable future for snacking in Egypt and the region, which will help us reduce our end-to-end CO2 emissions.”
“This project will enable us to convert 11% of our energy usage into clean energy, which represents a major milestone in our sustainability agenda, in line with our global commitment to achieve net zero emissions across our full value chain by 2050,” added El Kateb.

This cooperation comes as a huge millstone in the company’s journey towards environmental sustainability, and in line with Egypt’s 2030 vision, aiming at combating climate change and reaching zero carbon emissions, in addition to replacing traditional energy sources with environmentally friendly ones.
It is worth mentioning that Ona Electric will be responsible for constructing, designing, building, operating, maintaining and financing the solar power plant for the duration of the agreement.
