Egypt, represented by Egypt Post, has won the membership of the Council of Administration (CA) and the Postal Operations Council (POC) for the 2021-2025 session, in the elections conducted by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during the 27th Universal Postal Congress held on August 9-28 in Abidjan.
The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat stressed that Egypt’s winning of the membership reflects the international community’s recognition of the country’s remarkable standing and leading role. The winning also affirms Egypt’s active participation in regional and international events to develop postal policies in line with the growing role of postal institutions, which now deliver, alongside postal services, different other services that represent an added value to bring about economic and social development in societies.
Moreover, this milestone also reflects the success of Egypt’s strategy for developing the post, optimizing its capabilities, and maximizing its regional and international role. Talaat added that Egypt Post is witnessing a boom in terms of the type and quality of services, following international standards. In addition, he pointed to Egypt Post’s vital role in supporting the state plans to achieve the transition into an integrated digital society, since Egypt Post serves as one of Digital Egypt channels and a mainstay of implementing the national strategy for promoting financial inclusion.
The ICT Minister congratulated Egypt Post executives and employees and wished them success.
For his part, the Egyptian National Post Organization (ENPO) Chairman Sherif Farouk stated that this year’s elections were very competitive among the Member States. Egypt came first with 134 votes, Kenya came second with 124 votes, then Tanzania with 123 votes. This achievement shows that Egypt occupies a leading position at the African and international levels.
Farouk said that CA and POC are of particular importance; they lay the foundations for the international postal work and enable Egypt Post to engage in developing global postal work strategies and benefit from those strategies in making the paradigm shift that it is currently witnessing. Furthermore, Egypt’s membership will help build fair postal policies that protect its interests and those of the Arab and African countries in light of the crucial shifts and challenges expected in the postal arena with the development of the postal market data and different elements of work.
Egypt Post thanked all the Member States that voted for Egypt in the elections.
