As one of the largest companies operating in the sustainable construction sector in the Egyptian market, CEMEX Egypt announced the milestones it achieved during 2022.
CEMEX Egypt, in cooperation with several partners, is currently participating in the construction process of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project by supplying the project with up to 220,000 cubic meters of concrete products. The company also took part in a range of residential and commercial projects through its various products.
In regard to digital transformation, the company celebrated the 5th anniversary of its digital platform “CEMEX GO”, which is the first digital platform in the building materials sector in Egypt and is considered a leap forward for the sector.
On another front, climate action has taken a front seat in the company’s 2022 ride, especially with Egypt hosting the twenty-seventh edition of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), where CEMEX was a main participant in line with its efforts towards climate action.
The company’s CEO, Fernando Gonzalez, participated in several events including a panel discussion with market experts in the field of energy and building materials, where they discussed the global challenges faced by the market to decarbonize the ecosystem of the building & construction sector and its supply chain. Mr. Gonzalez was also a main panelist in the “First Movers Coalition” session in attendance of John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.
As for community & social impact, CEMEX Egypt cooperated with the “VeryNile” initiative to clean the Nile River by collecting and recycling plastic waste and safely transforming the non-recyclable waste into alternative fuel and using it in its cement plant in Assiut. Since the protocol signing ceremony, CEMEX has received 5 trucks loaded with non-hazardous, non-recyclable plastic waste, with a total amount of about 28 tons, to be converted and used as alternative fuel in Assiut plant, instead of fossil fuels.
Additionally, the company’s employees launched the “No More Plastic” campaign to stop using plastic products at the workplace, which comes as a continuation of the company’s efforts and directions towards a more sustainable future for the coming generations, as the initiative focused on three pillars:
• Stopping the Use of Single-Use Plastic Bags: In this regard, the company provided cloth bags for all employees to use for their daily activities, instead of plastic bags. Since each person uses more than 700 plastic bags annually (according to World Count), CEMEX employees will contribute to saving 1,610,000 plastic bags annually, by committing to stop using plastic bags.
• Stopping The Use of Plastic Bottles: The company also distributed reusable water bottles which preserves the water’s temperature to the workers, for the purpose of using them instead of plastic bottles.
• Safe Disposal of Plastic Bags: The company placed two boxes in both Cairo and Assiut for a period of five days, in order to collect plastic bags from employees, and awarded them with gifts and vouchers according to the number of bags disposed of. Throughout the 5 days, CEMEX was able to collect more than 26,000 plastic bags from its employees. These bags were delivered to “VeryNile”, where a group of women will recycle them into bags and other products.
CEMEX Egypt has played a major role over the past years in contributing to the company’s global direction and achieving its goals through innovation, hard work and by providing more sustainable products. Its commitment to the use of alternative fuel is growing day by day, and it is a major step towards protecting the environment from CO2 emissions which result from the use of fossil fuels and the unsafe disposal of waste
