For the 25th year in a row, Canon and Visa pour l’Image will award an €8,000 grant to a female photojournalist pursuing a long-term documentary project. The grant is designed to support the completion of an existing project or facilitate the making of a new one. Entries will be judged by a jury of renowned industry experts.
Reshaping home: Indonesia’s capital
Last year’s grantee, Dutch photojournalist Cynthia Boll, will showcase her ongoing project ‘Reshaping home: Indonesia’s capital migration’ at this year’s Visa pour l’Image festival in Perpignan, France. In this project, started around 2014, she examines the challenges facing Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, home to over 10 million people and sinking fast – up to 20 centimetres per year due to deep ground water extraction. Authorities have made the decision to move Indonesia’s capital from Jakarta to the emerging city of Ibu Kota Nusantara, a monumental endeavour with far-reaching implications. Cynthia’s latest chapter of this long-term project examines whether Ibu Kota Nusantara can transform into a thriving capital.
