In a dramatic turn of events, Zamalek secured a crucial 2-1 victory over archrivals Al-Ahly in a postponed match from the tenth round of the Egyptian Premier League.
This result significantly alters the league standings, propelling Zamalek into a more competitive position.
The White Knights got off to a flying start with Tunisian forward Seifeddine Jaziri breaking the deadlock in the 45th minute.
A pinpoint pass from playmaker Nasser Maher found Jaziri unmarked in the box, who coolly slotted the ball past Al-Ahly goalkeeper Moustafa Shober.
However, Al-Ahly refused to go down without a fight. Ahmed Abdel Qader restored parity in the 74th minute, capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Reda Selim.
He directed his shot to the left of Mohamed Awad, Zamalek’s goalkeeper, sending shivers down the spines of the Zamalek faithful.
Just when the momentum seemed to be shifting towards the Red Devils, Jaziri stepped up once again. In the 86th minute, he converted another opportunity to put Zamalek back in front. This time, his clinical finish secured all three points for the Cairo giants.
The match was marred by an early injury to Zamalek’s star midfielder Ahmed Sayed “Zizou” in the fourth minute.
A strong challenge from Al-Ahly defender Rami Rabia forced Zizou to leave the field. Zamalek also lost left-back Ahmed Fattouh during the second half due to injury, with Mustafa El-Zenari taking his place.
This victory elevates Zamalek to tenth place in the Egyptian Premier League table with 21 points. Al-Ahly, on the other hand, remains in ninth place with the same number of points.
The outcome of this match has undoubtedly shaken up the league standings and promises an exciting race for the championship title in the remaining rounds.
