Overlooking the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) rises proudly, not only as an architectural masterpiece, but also as a national symbol of Egypt’s growing vision for its heritage.
The long-awaited opening of the GEM marks a major milestone in Egypt’s modern era, blending civilisation, culture, and sports in a bold step that turns the nation’s rich heritage into a source of growth and pride.

With more than 50,000 artefacts, spanning thousands of years, the museum opens new horizons, especially in sports tourism, positioning itself as a key destination for major global sporting events.
Sports personalities unanimously agree that the museum’s unveiling reinforces Egypt’s vision of integrating sports and culture within a single framework of soft power, enhancing the country’s image worldwide.
Athletes across Egypt celebrated the launch as a moment of pride, seeing in it the spirit of discipline, challenge, and victory — values shared by both sports and civilisation.

The GEM will officially open its doors for the members of the public on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, following a spectacular artistic and cultural ceremony, one of the most anticipated global events in recent history.
A historic milestone
Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi described the GEM opening as a historic and exceptional event that reflects the greatness of Egypt and its timeless civilisation.
This is a new message to the world, the minister said, affirming that Egypt moves confidently towards the future, building on its glorious past and vibrant present.
He emphasised that the museum, which houses some of humanity’s greatest treasures, reflects the Egyptian leadership’s vision of a New Republic, one that combines tradition with modern life and puts Egyptian identity at the heart of sustainable development.

“The opening ceremony of the museum is a source of pride and honour for every Egyptian youth, one showcasing a spirit of creativity, achievement, and determination,” the minister said in remarks to the press ahead of the opening of the GEM.
He extended his heartfelt congratulations to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on this historic achievement, and to everyone who helped make this monumental project a reality.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s status as the “cradle of civilisation”.
Global moment
Renowned Portuguese coach Nelo Vingada, former manager of Benfica and the Portuguese national team, described the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum as a “great moment for Egypt and the entire world”.
“This is a global event that allows everyone to experience Egypt’s ancient history and culture,” Vingada said in remarks to the Egyptian news channel, Al-Qahera News.
Vingada, who also served as the technical manager of the Egyptian Football Association, emphasised that like history, sport is a vital part of culture and national development.

“Egypt is a country of great history and wonderful people,” Vingada, a former Zamalek coach (in the 2003–2004 Premier League season) and later led Egypt’s U-20 national team, said.
Expressing his deep affection for Egypt, he added that he looks forward to visiting the museum soon.
“Egypt is my second homeland, and it will always remain in my heart,” Vingada said.
Historic triumph
Former Egypt and Al-Ahly goalkeeper Ahmed Shobeir hailed the opening as a “huge event that fills every Egyptian with pride”.
The museum, he added, would significantly boost tourism and project the true image of Egypt to the world.
Meanwhile, former Zamalek and Al-Ahly star Reda Abdel Aal echoed this sentiment.

He said the GEM’s realisation is a credit to President Sisi, who has led the way in launching major national projects of historic scale.
“When you see what’s happening across the country, you feel proud,” Abdel Aal said.
Zamalek legend Khaled Al-Ghandour also expressed pride, saying: “I’m proud and happy that the largest museum in the world stands here in Egypt, an achievement every Egyptian should celebrate”.
Glory aired
To ensure that all Egyptians take part in this historic moment, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has set up large display screens in sports clubs and youth centres nationwide to broadcast the opening live.
This initiative gives millions of citizens the chance to watch the grand celebration in real time and enjoy a festive national atmosphere.

The broadcasts will also feature documentaries and promotional videos highlighting the museum’s treasures and historical significance, aiming to boost cultural awareness and strengthen national identity among youth.
