LONDON — Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah said that he is ‘more out than in’ at the English Premier League club with still no offer of a new contract.
The Egyptian striker, whose current deal expires next summer, scored twice as Liverpool came back to beat Southampton 3-2 Sunday to open an eight-point lead at the top of the league standings.
Not such good news, however, for the Liverpool fans who sang his name at St Mary’s were his post-match comments.
The 32-year-old, who has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season, is out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
“Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay at the club. I’m probably more out than in,” Salah, who has scored 10 Premier League goals and made six assists this season, told reporters.
Salah, who stopped to address media before boarding the Liverpool team coach, said he was disappointed by the situation.
“I love the fans and the fans love me but it’s not in my hands. Let’s wait and see,” Salah said according to Reuters.
Salah joined Liverpool in 2017 and has become a cult hero at the Anfield club for whom he has scored 165 goals in 262 Premier League appearances.
The way he has begun this season suggests the 32-year-old is still very much at the peak of his powers.
“I’m very professional. Everybody can see my work ethic. I’m just trying to enjoy my football and I will play at the top level as long as possible,” Salah said.
“I’m just doing my best because this is who I am and I try to give it all for myself and for the club. We will see what happens next.”
“You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands,” Salah underlined according to AFP.
Salah is one of the three key Liverpool players who will soon be heading into the last six months of their deals, with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also out of contract at the end of the season.
All three will be free to speak to overseas clubs in January if they do not sign an extension before then.
Asked if he was disappointed not to have received an offer from Liverpool, Salah added: “Of course, yeah. I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see.
“I’m not going to retire soon so I’m just playing, focusing on the season and I’m trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I’m disappointed but we will see.”
Liverpool was trailing 2-1 when Salah scored twice in the second half to take his season’s tally to 10 goals in the league, two behind the league’s top scorer Erling Haaland of City.
After Man City lost their league game to Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool took full advantage and Arne Slot’s side now has 31 points from 12 games to City’s 23 ahead of their clash at Anfield next weekend.
“They were very important, especially after being down 2-1. It’s the most important thing to have won the game,” Salah told Sky Sports.
“Each game is different. They had a game plan and played very well. We managed to come back and win the game. I think we have a good game plan, we played our game and I was confident we would create chances.
“Man City is Man City. They have a bad time now but they have great players… We have a game against them so hopefully; we win it and go 11 points clear,” Salah added.
