HURGHADA, Egypt – A motorbikes marathon kicked off in the Red Sea resort city of Hurghada to mark the Bicycle Day which is celebrated in June each year.
The marathon was inaugurated by Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy via video-conference technique, according to a statement issued by the Red Sea Governorate.
Organized by the youth and sports directorate in Red Sea, the marathon has drawn youth from across the country, the statement said.
The marathon started from Hurghada’s Corniche road and will pass by El Nasr street in down town, the statement read.
World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of using the bicycle – a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation, according to the United Nations.
Acknowledging the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and fosters environmental stewardship and health, the UN General Assembly decided to declare June 3 World Bicycle Day.
