CAIRO – Egyptian sabre standout Ziad Elsissy continued his rise on the international stage, securing the bronze medal at the World Cup sabre fencing competition in the United States, held from January 22 to 25.
Elsissy, a key member of the Egyptian national sabre team, showcased remarkable skill throughout the tournament. His impressive run culminated in a semi-final clash against Japanese champion Mao Kokubo, where he narrowly fell 15-11, earning a well-deserved third-place finish.
The Egyptian athlete’s journey to the podium was a display of determination and tactical mastery. He opened his campaign in the round of 64 with a nail-biting 15-14 victory over Kamil Ibragimov.
He then defeated Spain’s Jimmy Flores 15-11 in the round of 32, followed by a 15-12 win against US champion Colin Heacock in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, Elsissy edged past Romania’s Vlad Covaliu 15-14, setting the stage for his semi-final showdown.
Recognised as one of Egypt’s top sabre talents, Elsissy continues to leave his mark on the international circuit. Last year, he also captured a bronze medal at the World Cup in Italy.
Ashraf Sobhy, Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, congratulated Elsissy on his achievement, emphasising the ministry’s ongoing commitment to supporting national champions and teams.
