MADRID- Egypt’s tennis player Mayar Sherif, ranked 59th, was qualified for the quarter-final at the Madrid Open championship to become the first ever Egyptian player to reach this round.
This has been secured after Sherif’s well-deserved win over Belgian player Elise Mertens, ranked 29th, at the round of 16th, by two of three sets recording 6-4, 6-0, 6-4.
Sherif will play the winner of the match taking place between Belarus player Aryna Sabalenka, ranked 2nd, and Russian player Mirra Andreeva, ranked 194.
On Thursday, Sherif reached the round of 32 at the Madrid Open after defeating Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina and No 40 Caroline Garcia of France.
The Madrid Open tournament kicked off in the Spanish capital on April 24, and will wrap up on May 7.
