DOHA – Egypt’s artistic gymnast Nancy Taman won the bronze medal at the 13th Artistic Gymnastics World Cup, hosted by Doha.
The 26-year-old Egyptian came in third place with 13.366 points.
Egypt, along with 24 countries, competes in the tournament to book six seats in the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Egyptian artistic gymnasts Omar el-Arabi, Ali Zahran, Jana Hani, Zeina Ibrahim and Nancy Taman qualified for the final rounds of the tournament.
Head of the Egyptian Gymnastics Federation Ihab Amin hailed this achievement made by the national gymnastics team in the World Cup in Qatar.
Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan emerged top with the gold medal with 14.066 points in the women’s Vault final ahead of Coline Devillard of France who came in second place with 13.966 points.
The 44-year-old Uzbekistan veteran breaks all paradigms. Among the teenage girl competitors, who were not even born when she competed in her first Olympics in 1992, Oksana remains a mother figure to most of her challengers yet quite a tough nut to crack.
Oksana won a gold medal with the Unified Team, formed by athletes from countries of the former Soviet Union, at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
Age has been just a number for her, but it remains to be seen how she competes in a tough field in Tokyo next month.
“If I’m a role model for one or two other female athletes who look up to me and decide to extend their sporting longevity, I’m honored,” she said.
