PARIS – Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah won the Golden Foot award, during the ceremony held Monday evening in the French Emirate of Monaco.
Salah made his wife receive the award on his behalf on stage, from Brazilian star Dani Alves, Barcelona’s right-back, during the ceremony.
Salah, 29, grabbed the Golden Foot award for the current year, outperforming several prominent stars in Europe, led by Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, Argentine striker Sergio Aguero, his compatriot Lionel Messi, and Polish star Robert Lewandowski.
10 players were nominated by a panel of international journalists to win the Golden Foot, provided the player is over 28 years old, then the audience will be voted on in an online poll to choose the winner.
Salah became the first Arab player to win the award, as well as the third African player after Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba..
In statements reported by Sky Sports, Salah said about his awarding of the award: “It is wonderful to win the Golden Foot award, especially since those who won it before are the legends of the game.”
