Egyptian athletes continue to grab medals in various international competitions.
The Egyptian national fencing team has recently won the gold medal in the men’s junior team epee at the 2022 Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships, after defeating the American team 45-40 in the finals.
In the semifinal round, Egypt defeated France 45–35, while the US beat Switzerland 43-37.
The bronze medal went to France which defeated Switzerland 45-39.
The competition took place at Hamdan Sports Complex in the UAE between April 2 and 10.
Forty-two men’s teams and 33 women’s teams participated in this top fencing event.
Some 42 players, including 21 males and 21 females, participated in the world championships in Dubai.
“This victory reflects the progress Egyptian fencing is making and the ability of national fencers to make achievements and win various titles,” Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, said in comment on the results made by the Egyptian fencing team in the competition.
Team member, Mohamed el-Sayed, expressed joy at the same results.
“It was amazing to win,” el-Sayed said. “We had a great season and it’s an incredible feeling.”
The last match, he said, was not an easy ride for his team.
“However, we stayed strong and took the win,” el-Sayed said. “Now, we’re the world’s champions.”
Egypt also secured two additional medals. The youth fencing team won the bronze medal in the competitions, while team player, Muhammad Yassin, won the silver medal in the individual competitions for the fencing sword.
Egypt’s national team tops the international rankings. It is followed in these rankings by Switzerland and the US which comes in third place.
Head of the Egyptian Fencing Federation, Abdel Monem el-Husseni, who is also the Vice-President of the International Fencing Federation, said winning the gold medal in the World Junior Fencing Championship for the second time in a row reflects Egypt’s position on the world fencing map.
Egypt’s new target, he said, is to win an Olympic medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The last Olympic medal Egypt captured was in the 2012 London Olympics when Alaa Abu al-Qasim won the silver medal.
Enjoying the trust of international bodies, Cairo will host the Epee Grand Prix between April 29 and May 1.
The International Fencing Federation assigned this global event to Egypt after Colombia’s sudden apology, only 36 days ahead of the competition.
The federation lauded Egypt’s ability to organise major international sports competitions.
In February this year, the World Cup for Men’s Frying Arms was organised at Hall No. 1 of the Indoor Halls Complex in Cairo Stadium.
Around 177 players from 36 countries participated in the tournament.
The Cairo Stadium Indoor Complex also hosted the three-day Fencing World Cup between February 25 and 27.
The competition featured 175 players who represented 22 teams from 33 countries.
Day after day, Egyptian fencing proves that it is on the right track of developing and promoting this sport among young Egyptians.
The Under-17 team won two bronze medals in the European Union Fencing Championship which was held in Bucharest, Romania, from 28 to 31 January.
The two medals came in both the individual and team events, which saw the participation of 215 players from around the world.
