CAIRO — Egyptian fencing star Mohamed El-Sayed made a splash at the Fencing World Cup in Astana, taking home bronze after four days of tough competition from March 26 to 29.

He fought his way to the semi-finals, and even though Roman Svytshkar from Ukraine stopped him there with a 15–7 win, El-Sayed still landed on the podium.

His run started solid. In the round of 64, the Egyptian beat South Korea’s Minseong Son 12–7, staying cool under pressure. Next, he edged past Hong Kong’s Hui Sun Fung in a nail-biting match, clinching victory 15–14 with a golden touch.

In the round of 16, El-Sayed dominated neutral athlete Kirill Onychuk, winning 15–5. Then, in the quarter-finals, he handled Germany’s Marco Brinkmann with another dominant victory, finishing 15–9.

He didn’t get past the semis this time, but grabbing bronze proves he’s still among the world’s fencing elite. For El-Sayed, it’s another highlight in a career that just keeps growing.

Notably, he previously etched his name into Egyptian fencing history with a bronze medal at the 2014 Paris Olympics.
