CAIRO — The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) announced that Egypt will host the 2026 Wheelchair Basketball 3×3 World Open for men and women from November 26 to 28, 2026, in Cairo.
The event was awarded to the Egyptian Wheelchair Basketball Federation in recognition of Egypt’s growing organisational capabilities, particularly in light of the sport’s notable development in recent years at both technical and administrative levels.
The tournament will be held under an open participation format, allowing all countries to compete without qualification rounds, in a move aimed at expanding the sport’s global base and providing emerging teams with international exposure.

The 3×3 format is considered a key pillar in the development of wheelchair basketball due to its fast-paced nature, ease of organisation, and broader participation opportunities, making it central to IWBF’s global expansion strategy.
Egyptian federation president Mai Zein El-Din welcomed the hosting decision, affirming Egypt’s commitment to delivering a high-level tournament both on and off the court, reflecting the country’s organisational standards.
For his part, IWBF President Ulf Mehrens expressed confidence in Egypt’s ability to stage a successful edition, noting the country’s strong commitment to developing the sport.
Egypt’s hosting of the global event follows the national team’s strong performance at the African Championship in Angola, where it secured the bronze medal and third place after facing tough competition against Benin, Angola, Congo, and Morocco.
