From rising contender to global force, Egyptian fencing has made its mark. Over a dazzling stretch of weeks, the Pharaohs of the piste have surged from continental dominance to international acclaim, delivering a string of performances that underline a programme hitting its peak at exactly the right time.

Momentum now shifts to home soil. Egypt will host the Foil World Cup at the Cairo International Stadium Indoor Halls Complex from April 16–19.

This landmark event underscores growing global confidence in the nation’s ability to stage elite competition at the highest level—even amid a challenging global backdrop.

Golden blade

At the 2026 NCAA Fencing Championships in South Bend, which concluded last week, Egyptian athletes didn’t just show up — they took charge, dictating the pace and grabbing four medals: two gold, one silver, and one bronze.

In a field stacked with the finest collegiate talent across the United States, Egypt’s stars stood tall.

Youssef Shamel, just 19, won gold in men’s épée and led the University of North Carolina to its first-ever NCAA fencing title. That’s not just a win; that’s a spark for a new generation. Mohamed El-Sayed, an Olympic medalist, picked up bronze, adding to Egypt’s tally.

The sabre competition delivered one of the tournament’s defining moments: an all-Egyptian final.

Ahmed Hesham edged out compatriot Adham Moataz 15–12 in a high-energy duel, snagging the gold while Moataz settled for silver. Egypt owned the podium, a first for the NCAA in this weapon.

It was a historic first—Egypt occupying both top steps of the NCAA podium in a single weapon.

But it wasn’t just about individual brilliance. Egyptian fencers helped their university teams shine, too.

Hesham took Notre Dame University to team gold. Ziad Noufal and Moataz boosted Columbia and St. John’ s podium finishes.

Global hub

Egypt has become a major player in hosting International Fencing Federation (FIE) events, combining cutting-edge sports infrastructure with flawless organisation.

In recent years, the country has earned global acclaim, with the FIE and visiting teams lauding its ability to stage tournaments that meet the highest standards of professionalism and competitive excellence.

World-class fencing competitions are now a common sight in Egypt, and the nation’s impact reaches far beyond the confines of the fencing strip.

The upcoming 2026 World Cup in April will see more than 400 fencers from 46 nations competing for crucial Olympic qualification points.

Amid this atmosphere, Cairo isn’t just showcasing its fencing prowess; it’s making a statement: the city is ready, seamlessly blending world-class organisation with top-tier competition.

Its arenas have evolved into trusted venues, welcoming the world’s finest athletes with confidence, professionalism, and unwavering stability.

Piste glory

Egypt’s run leading into the NCAA was already impressive. At the African Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in Dakar, which concluded last month, the team collected 42 medals — 22 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze.

They didn’t just win; they dominated — across every weapon and age group.

In the under-20 category, names like Youssef Eissa (épée), Omar Dweidar (sabre), Karim Assem (foil), Farah Mahfouz (épée), and Khadija Abou Alam (sabre) topped the podium.

The under-17 division added their own wave of champions. Fatima Wahba (foil), Adam Khodary (épée), Khadija Abou Alam (sabre), Omar Saleh (foil), and Farida Khalil (épée) kept Egypt’s gold streak alive.

Egypt’s medals were more than just gold. With nine silvers and eleven bronzes, their team showed real depth.

Every weapon, every age group – they’re right there, competitive and consistent.

Silver medal standouts included the under-20 girls’ foil team and individual talents like Jana Ehab, Islam Osama, Anan Hegazi, Younes Khalil, Younes El-Abrashi, Nour Mahfouz, Hamza Abouhalwa.

The bronze list is just as impressive – Loujain Khaled, Younes Khalil, Fouad Gharib, Adham Shalaby, Ali Attia, Mohannad El-Assal, Salma El-Sheikh, Nagwa Noufal, Arwa Nasser, Youssef Mahrous, Rawda Hammad. Clearly, Egypt’s bench is loaded. When someone steps up, they deliver.

Medal moment

Youssef Shamel added another highlight to Egypt’s medal tally, claiming bronze in the Under-20 individual event at the Junior Sabre World Cup in Cairo last month.

He stayed calm, made smart decisions, and showed resilience. Five wins out of six group bouts? That’s tough. Then he powered through the knockout rounds.

From start to finish, Shamel was steady. He set the tone early in the pools—five victories, just one loss—and kept his composure the whole way, showing maturity beyond his age.

This Cairo edition of the Junior Sabre World Cup was a true test of elite junior fencing, drawing 531 athletes, 54 nations. The scale and depth of the competition was intense, so Shamel’s podium finish meant even more.

It’s more than just another medal. His bronze is proof Egypt’s youth system is clicking.

With the team’s broader success, it reinforces a clear message: Egypt has moved beyond competition; it is now a producer of champions.

Winning streak

At the center of Egypt’s surge is Mohamed El-Sayed. He added another bronze to his collection at the World Cup event in Germany, cementing his reputation as a powerhouse in the sport and a driving force behind the team’s momentum.

His run was a masterclass in control and precision. He dispatched fencers from Canada, China, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic before hitting a wall in the semi-final to Italy’s Davide De Fiore.

That bronze doesn’t just add to his reputation—it builds on his 2024 Olympic Games podium finish in Paris.

Elite stage

Egyptian fencing is on a roll—from NCAA wins to dominating Africa, steady World Cup podiums, and now hosting the 2026 Foil World Cup this April. With youth, experience, strong support, and international exposure, they’ve got all the pieces.

Egypt is not just an up-and-comer—it is now a global contender and a premier hosting hub, setting its sights on even greater stages ahead.
