Al-Ahly Club won the CAHB African Super Cup title, after defeating its traditional rivals Zamalek 24 – 27 last Sunday at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Hall in Al-Ahly Club.
This win qualifies Al-Ahly for the 2023 IHF Men’s Super Globe, to be held in Saudi Arabia from October 17 to 23.
This was Al-Ahly’s third trophy in the history of the CAHB African Super Cup, after the ones sealed in 2017 and 2022. It was also the second in a row.
However, the Egyptian club moved to third place in the all-time standings of the competition, after MC Alger, which won the trophy nine times, and Zamalek which have seven titles.
It was also the sixth consecutive trophy for Egyptian sides. Egypt now has the highest number of trophies in the Men’s CAHB African Super Cup, one more than Algeria.
The new title brings the number of handball, basketball and volleyball championships won by Al-Ahly this season up to 14. Zamalek won four championships only in the same season.
Al-Ahly outperforming Zamalek in handball
Al-Ahly are overshadowing the handball field, years after Zamalek controlled the game.
Game specialists attribute the success of the former in outshining their traditional rivals to their decision to promote Captain Khaled al-Awadi to Director of Sports Activity in April 2022.
Al-Awadi succeeded in revolutionizing the game inside Al-Ahly, sowing the seeds of this season’s excellence.
Al-Awadi started his tenure by contracting with a world-class technical director, namely David Davies, with a great record to lead the handball team.
Davies, a Spanish national, was hired by Al-Ahly in October 2022. He led the team in achieving the local double, for the first time in nine years.
Al-Ahly men’s handball team achieved the league and the cup double. They were crowned with the professional league title after defeating its arch-rivals, Zamalek, with a score of 24 – 21 at the end of the combined tournament.
Al-Ahly also won the Egyptian Handball Cup after defeating their counterpart, Sporting Club, with a score of 32 – 22 in the final round. This gives Al-Ahly their tenth cup in their history.
Al-Ahly won Zamalek in the semi-finals with a score of 27 – 25.
Al-Ahly’s first women’s handball team were also crowned the Egyptian Women’s Cup title, after defeating, Zamalek, with a score of 22 – 23, in the final of the tournament.
Al-Ahly’s women’s team also achieved victory over Sporting, with a score of 28 – 24, at the end of the combined session of the Women’s Handball General League, to officially win the championship title for the 43rd in the club’s history.
Zamalek’s men’s handball team was crowned the Egyptian Handball Super Cup, after defeating Al-Ahly with a score of 23 – 27.
Running circles around all others in basketball
Al-Ahly’s first men’s basketball team won the Professional League title at the expense of Al-Ittihad team, in a match that ended with a 64 – 59 in favour of the former team.
Al-Ahly was also crowned the Egyptian Basketball Cup after defeating Zamalek with a score of 72 – 65 in the final of the tournament.
Al-Ahly’s first women’s basketball team was crowned with the league title for the 2022/2023 season, after deciding the first-leg and second-leg matches in the tournament final against Sporting with a score of 77 – 45.
Al-Ahly also won the Egyptian Super Cup, after defeating Sporting with a score of 83 – 75.
Al-Ahly’s women’s basketball team also succeeded in winning the Egyptian Cup title for the 2022/2023 season, after defeating Al-Jazira in the final.
Zamalek dominating in volleyball
Zamalek’s first volleyball men’s team won the volleyball league title for the 2022/2023 season, after defeating their traditional rivals, Al-Ahly in the two matches.
Zamalek also clinched the Egypt Cup title for the 2022/2023 season, after defeating Al-Ahly with a score of 3 – 2, in the third decisive match.
Zamalek’s first women’s volleyball team were also crowned the Egyptian Cup Championship for the 2022/2023 season, after defeating Al-Ahly in the two matches.
