ALGIERS — USM Alger struck deep into stoppage time to claim a dramatic 1-0 victory over Zamalek in the first-leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final, in a match defined by late missed opportunities in Algiers.

Ahmed Khaldi converted a penalty in the 98th minute at the packed 5 July Stadium in Algeria, moments after Zamalek thought they had taken the lead at the other end, to hand the home side a slender but significant advantage ahead of the return-leg in Cairo.

The result leaves Zamalek needing at least a two-goal win in Egypt to secure the title outright, while USM Alger will travel with confidence after a disciplined display and a late breakthrough, cafonline.com reported.

The result gives USM Alger a crucial advantage heading into the return-leg in Cairo on May 16, but the tie remains finely balanced.

For much of the evening, the match appeared destined to end goalless as both sides battled intensely but struggled for cutting edge in the final third.

Zamalek, cautious in their approach, relied heavily on counter-attacks and nearly struck early when Chico Banza met a low cross from Oday Al-Dabbagh, only to see his effort comfortably saved.

USM Alger gradually took control of possession, probing through Ahmed Khaldi, Islam Merili and Dramane Kamagate, but Zamalek’s defensive line held firm, with goalkeeper El Mahdi Slimane largely untroubled despite sustained pressure.

The Algerian side continued to push forward, particularly through aerial balls and long-range efforts, but accuracy deserted them as chances went begging.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with USM Alger increasing the tempo and Zamalek remaining compact and disciplined.

Banza came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute after a brilliant solo run saw him dribble past defenders and the goalkeeper, only for a USM Alger defender to clear his shot off the line.

Moments later, Zamalek thought they had found the breakthrough when Al-Dabbagh finished from close range, but the effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

At the other end, Slimane produced a series of key saves, denying Khaldi and Brahim Benzaza, while headers from Kamagate and Zakaria Draoui drifted narrowly off target.

Despite the mounting pressure, Zamalek remained dangerous on the break, introducing Juan Bezerra in the latter stages to inject pace into their attack.

The defining moment came in stoppage time in extraordinary fashion.

Bezerra appeared to have won it for Zamalek, capitalising on a defensive error before driving into the box and finishing calmly past the goalkeeper, sparking wild celebrations among the visitors.

However, the referee halted play and consulted VAR, which revealed a handball by Zamalek defender Hossam Abdel-Maguid in the build-up. The goal was disallowed, and instead a penalty was awarded to USM Alger.

Zamalek were reduced to ten men after Mahmoud Bentayg was sent off for dissent.

Khaldi then stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick, sending Slimane the wrong way to secure a dramatic winner in the 98th minute.

Zamalek, despite the defeat, will take encouragement from their defensive organisation and counter-attacking threat, but must now find a way to break down a resolute Algerian side.

For USM Alger, the late victory rewards their persistence and dominance in possession, and puts them within touching distance of continental glory.

Yet with 90 minutes still to play, the Confederation Cup final remains wide open — and if the first leg is anything to go by, more drama awaits in Cairo.
