BERLIN – Brazilian Lucas di Grassi won the penultimate race of the Formula E season in Berlin with more than half the grid remaining mathematically in title contention with one day to go.
Mercedes’ Dutch driver Nyck de Vries stayed top of the all-electric world championship’s standings, despite failing to score, but is now only three points clear of Venturi’s Swiss racer Edoardo Mortara who finished second.
New Zealander Mitch Evans was third for Jaguar on the temporary track around the capital’s old Tempelhof airport and is fourth overall and a point behind Britain’s Jake Dennis for BMW Andretti.
The gap between first and seventh in the championship is only nine points.
“Everything is fully open going into race, we´re going to try as hard as possible to win both races and I´m sure if we win, we will be there to win the Championship,” Audi’s di Grassi said according to Reuters.
Di Grassi is sixth overall, eight points off the lead.
“We had since the beginning the news that Audi was going to leave Formula E. For me it was very sad because after seven years with the team, you are kind of being forced to end the relationship, which you don’t want to end because we’ve been so successful together.
“So this weekend is a mixture of sadness because Audi is leaving. but anyway we had so many victories, so many emotions together, with Abt as well – actually more with Abt than Audi but both together and today was a very special victory.
Jaguar is top of the teams’ championship with 171 points to DS Techeetah’s 166, despite Britain’s Sam Bird suffering a third successive retirement and dropping to eighth overall.
DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne started the race on pole position with team-mate Antonio Felix da Costa second on the grid.
The 2020-21 season is Formula E’s seventh but the first to be sanctioned by governing body FIA as a full world championship.
