CAIRO — Al-Ahly defeated bitter rivals Zamalek 4-1 at Cairo International Stadium in a match they were playing for prestige having already claimed the 2022/23 Egyptian Premier League title earlier this week.
Al-Ahly’s winger Hussein el-Shahat scored twice in the 2nd, 36th minutes.
Bafana Bafana attacker Percy Tau provided an assist for Tunisia’s Ali Maaloul to score the Red Devil’s third goal on the stroke of half-time. It was the South African’s eighth assist of the season across all competitions.
Ahly’s striker Mohamed Sherif added the fourth goal in the 92nd minute. Zamalek’s sole goal came from the penalty spot through Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” in the 68th minute.
African Champions Al-Ahly secured a record-extending 43rd Egyptian Premier League title, without playing on Monday, as their closest rivals Pyramids FC suffered a 2-1 defeat against Ceramica Cleopatra.
Karim Hafez gave Pyramids a 37th-minute lead to give them hopes of sustaining their minimal chances of winning the title.
However, Ceramica Cleopatra’s striker Salah Mohsen converted a Samuel Amadi pass to ensure Ceramica leveled matters.
Salah then struck the winner in the 83rd minute to hand Ahly the title.
The Red Devils, who won a record extending 11th title in African Champions League last month, have now clinched five titles since last October with coach Marcel Koller enjoying his first season in Egypt.
It’s the club’s third trophy of the season after winning the CAF Champions League in June and Egypt Super Cup in October 2022.
Former Austria coach Koller started his tenure with winning in October the Egyptian Super Cup, which was postponed from last season due to a busy schedule, then clinching a record-extending 38th Egypt Cup title in April, before winning one more Super Cup in May.
