The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) have started a new partnership to better track Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
This move aims to help the airline industry reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Announced during ICAO’s Aviation and Climate Week, the agreement brings together governments and airlines to use accurate data to measure carbon reduction progress.
Under this agreement, both organisations will use SAF registries and data to improve how fuel is tracked and reported worldwide.
By making fuel accounting simpler and more reliable, the partnership will help prove the industry’s real environmental progress. This will make it easier for airlines to show they are meeting global climate goals.
IATA Director General Willie Walsh stated that reliable tracking is key to knowing exactly how much emissions are being cut.
He explained that better data will build trust and encourage the faster adoption of sustainable fuels. Working with ICAO will create more accurate reporting tools to help the industry meet its 2050 climate goals.
ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar emphasised that reaching net-zero emissions requires great teamwork and transparency. He said this agreement will help ICAO monitor the production and use of SAF globally. This clear view ensures that all green investments are properly recognised under trusted international rules.
