The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has organised a training programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation to train a group of professionals from Uganda in the areas of early warning systems and meteorological forecasting.

The move is part of an Egyptian grant provided to the Republic of Uganda to implement the Egyptian-Ugandan project aimed at combating aquatic weeds in Uganda’s Great Lakes. Throughout the programme, experts delivered a comprehensive presentation on the “basics of meteorology” and provided practical training on advanced techniques in disaster management, climate research, and climate change. This training underscores the critical role meteorology plays in improving water resource management and safeguarding fisheries by providing accurate data that aids in making informed and effective strategic decisions.

The programme also included a visit to the Forecasting and Early Warning Centre, where participants were able to observe its operational methods as part of their hands-on training. In addition, the trainees toured the Egyptian Meteorological Museum to explore climatic and historical data related to meteorology and hydrology.

EMA Chairman Captain Hisham Tahoun stressed that these specialised training programmes are part of a broader effort to promote the exchange of expertise and knowledge. The initiative includes a series of training courses in early warning and meteorological forecasting, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of trainees from both African and Arab countries.

Furthermore, the training programme seeks to foster greater co-operation with Nile Basin countries and contribute to the development of human resources in this vital field.
