The neurosurgery and spine department at EgyptAir Hospital has successfully carried out a delicate surgical procedure to remove a complex fibroid tumour in the cervical spine of a 55-year-old patient. The tumour was found intertwined with the left carotid artery, posing a significant surgical challenge.
Led by Professor Abdallah Abdel Azim, Consultant of Neurosurgery, the surgical team included Mohamed Ehab, Head of the Neurosurgery Department, as well as Ahmed Abdelkader and Haitham Abdel-Gawad. Using a surgical microscope, the team successfully removed the tumour in full while preserving surrounding vital tissues. A sample was sent to pathology for further diagnostic analysis.
Following the tumour removal, the surgical team performed a resection of the fifth cervical vertebra using a high-speed surgical drill, replacing it with a carbon-based artificial vertebra and securing it in place. The patient made a full recovery and was discharged with no neurological deficits.
The neurosurgery department extended its gratitude to the hospital’s management, led by Ayman Salah, for their continued support of complex and high-risk procedures at EgyptAir Hospital.
