The Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) has hosted a workshop in collaboration with the European Commission to develop a national action plan for carbon emissions, which will be submitted to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The workshop was part of the Euro-Mediterranean Air Transport Project.
ECAA Chairman, Captain Amr El-Sharkawy, highlighted the importance of the plan in enhancing Egypt’s position on the international stage while ensuring the sustainability of its civil aviation sector. The initiative involves all key stakeholders, including airlines operating in Egypt, Egyptian airports, and air navigation companies.
The national action plan reflects Egypt’s commitment to ICAO’s global goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050. It aims to deliver long-term economic and environmental benefits and attract international technical and financial support to advance environmental initiatives.
The plan outlines specific measures to reduce carbon emissions, improve operational efficiency, and foster collaboration among stakeholders. It also emphasizes the need to align national policies with international requirements to achieve sustainable development goals.
The workshop’s closing session was attended by representatives from the European Commission, including Monika Bonfanti, and key figures in the Egyptian aviation sector. These included Captain Amr El-Sharkawy, Captain Wael El-Nashar, Chairman of the Egyptian Airports Company, Captain Sherif Khalil, Assistant Chairman of EgyptAir Holding Company, and other senior officials from airlines, navigation, and airport management.
The workshop concluded with a shared vision of developing a more sustainable aviation sector in Egypt, capable of meeting environmental challenges while aligning with international standards for long-term growth and sustainability.
