By Mohamed Attia

The Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation received this week Ali Tounsi, Secretary General of the Airport Council International for the Africa Region (ACI Africa), as part of preparations to host the ACI conference and exhibition for the African continent, under the auspices of Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed Abbas Helmy, in Cairo from February 24 to March 1, 2024.

The visit of Tounsi, Secretary General of the Airports Council International, to the African region began with a tour of Cairo International Airport to get acquainted with the available capabilities at the airport and the latest developments and expansions that took place in the past period, in addition to duty-free shops, the Cairo Airport Museum, and lecture halls at the Cairo Airport Company Training Center.

Tounsi praised the developments that took place at Cairo airport, which is one of the most important airports on the continent of Africa, and the choice of Cairo to host the conference due to its rich history and rapid development in infrastructure.

That makes it a model that combines tradition and modernity, which will give a distinctive character to the meetings in addition to Egypt’s pioneering and historical role in establishing and developing African airports and air transport system, which was reflected this year in the Egyptian airports leading the number of passengers on the African continent.

The Secretary General of the Airports Council International for the African region also visited Sphinx International Airport, praising the development of its services.

Tounsi expressed his happiness for having this wonderful opportunity to visit Sphinx International Airport, which quickly turned into a hub connecting travellers to the famous archaeological sites in Egypt.

The official page of the Airports Council International for the African Region also praised Sphinx International Airport, describing the airport as “achieving excellence in the world of aviation and located just steps away from the legendary Giza pyramids and the famous Grand Egyptian Museum,” in addition to “commitment to sustainable development measures and environmental preservation.”

It is worth noting that the total area of Sphinx Airport is 24,000 square metres, and it includes the departure and arrival halls with a capacity of 1,200 passengers per hour, and it contains 10 arrival counters, 10 travel counters, 3 luggage belts, a travel and arrival hall for VIP visitors, and 6 airline counters.

Eng. Mohamed Saeed Mahrous

For his part, Engineer Mohamed Saeed Mahrous, Chairman of the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation, directed to provide all capabilities so that the Airports Council International Conference and Exhibition for the African continent appears in an honourable manner that befits Egypt and its status

Mahrous added that the Ministry of Aviation attaches great importance to such events, especially as it discusses ways to enhance the growth of airports by organising revenues from outside the field of aviation, multiplying revenue sources, developing the infrastructure of African airports, training qualified human resources to deal with passengers, and opportunities to attract investments in this sector.
