An Air Europa flight arrived at Sphinx International Airport (SPX) on Tuesday coming from Madrid, Spain, in the first such flight by that Spanish flag carrier to the airport.
Air Europa will operate two flights a month to SPX.
The Sphinx International Airport, inaugurated in January 2020, is located on the desert road between Cairo and Alexandria – 45 kilometres from the Pyramids of Giza.
The location of SPX was selected to service visitors to the country who arrive on one-day trips to the historic sites in Giza.
SPX also aims to relieve congestion at Cairo International Airport and lower traffic jams in the capital.
After expansion works, the airport’s total area is 24,000 square metres, up from 4,500 square metres.
Meanwhile, the airport can now receive one million passengers per year after its capacity was expanded to 900 passengers per hour, up from 300 passengers per hour.
The Egyptian Airports Company has recently eased all procedures to accommodate passengers at SPX as part of the government’s plan to attract 25-30 million tourists by 2028, up from the current 14-15 million figure.
